Lightning Network Records 300 Percent Volume Growth

The Bitcoin Lightning Network experienced significant growth in November 2025. According to new data from the company River, $1.17 billion was transferred via the second-layer solution – an increase of more than 300 percent compared to November 2024, when the volume stood at $286.5 million ^[1].

Notably, however, the number of transactions did not increase at the same rate. With 5.22 million transactions in November 2025, it was actually below the figure from August 2023, when 6.6 million transactions were recorded. The average transaction size has nearly doubled to $223, compared to $118 the previous year ^[1].

Sam Wouters, Marketing Director at River, attributes the growth primarily to the increasing integration of Lightning by exchanges, which tend to move larger amounts. The growing number of companies accepting Bitcoin via Lightning as a payment method is also contributing to the development ^[1].

Data collection for Lightning is challenging, as transactions are not publicly visible. River worked with major node operators, thereby covering 50.6 percent of total Lightning capacity, from which the remaining figures were extrapolated ^[1].
