Sats Purchasing Power

What was a fixed amount of Bitcoin - here 100,000 sats (0.001 BTC) - really worth over the years? In 2013 it equalled 0.015 €, today 56.1 €. The other way round: €1 bought about 6,517,533 sats in 2013, only 1,782 today. The chart separates four lenses - nominal euro value, inflation-adjusted real purchasing power (CPI selectable: Euro area, Germany, US), in grams of gold, and euro/dollar against Bitcoin (how many sats €1 bought). Bitcoin price from our own database, inflation from FRED, gold price from Yahoo Finance. Purely descriptive, not a forecast.

Pick the view (nominal · real · in gold · €/$ vs BTC), the region and the sats amount. "Real" restates the value in today's euros/dollars; "€/$ vs BTC" shows the inverse - how many sats €1 or $1 bought over time, i.e. the currency's value against Bitcoin.

Methodology & data

Sat value = Bitcoin monthly close from our own database ÷ 100,000,000 (USD and EUR). Real = nominal value × CPI(today) ÷ CPI(month) - makes amounts comparable across time; CPI basis selectable (Euro-area HICP, Germany, US). Gold = nominal USD value ÷ gold price per gram (London fixing ÷ 31.1035 g/ounce). Consumer price indices from FRED, gold price (XAU/USD) from Yahoo Finance, monthly (CPI) and business-daily (gold), stored on our side and refreshed daily; aligned to a monthly grid. From 2013 onward. Purely historical - not a forecast, not financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

01What does "sats purchasing power" mean?

How much a fixed amount of sats (default 100,000 = 0.001 BTC) could buy at a point in time - not only in euros, but also inflation-adjusted and in gold. That separates "Bitcoin went up" from "the euro lost purchasing power".

02What does "real" / inflation-adjusted mean?

The real value restates a past euro amount in today's purchasing power via the consumer price index (CPI). It lets you compare amounts from different years fairly, because the euro itself loses value over time. You can switch the CPI basis (Euro area, Germany or US).

03Has the euro lost purchasing power against Bitcoin?

In the "€/$ vs BTC" view you see how many sats €1 bought over time - since 2013 that has fallen sharply, because Bitcoin rose massively against the euro. It's purely a euro↔Bitcoin comparison and not a statement about general fiat inflation - that's what the "Real" view shows via the consumer price index.

04Where does the data come from?

The Bitcoin price is from our own price database (monthly closes). The consumer price indices (US, Euro area, Germany) come from FRED (Federal Reserve Economic Data), the gold price (XAU/USD) from Yahoo Finance. Both are stored on our side and refreshed daily.
